After missing on five of his first seven passes, Stafford finished 17 for 26 through the air for 249 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.

The Browns were out of timeouts, however, and after tight end David Njoku could not get two feet down on a potential touchdown pass from quarterback DeShone Kizer, the Browns had a second-and-goal with 15 seconds remaining.

The Browns were driving as time elapsed when Detroit's Darius Slay intercepted Kizer in the end zone to set the final score.

Kizer was tackled by cornerback Quandre Diggs on a blitz while throwing an incompletion.

It was one of those play calls that the Browns have become known for, one that fans wish they could unsee after it unfolds. Detroit improved to 5-4 on the season. He started every game for the Lions as a rookie last season after being drafted in the first round.

The Browns made mistakes, including at the end of the first half when they botched the most basic elements in clock management.

Then, after a 35-yard pass to tight end Seth DeValve pushed the ball to the 1-yard line, the Browns retook the lead at 24-17 on Kizer's quarterback sneak with 2:23 to go in the third. With seven more games to go, the Browns are hoping to avoid becoming only the second team to go 0-16, a record held by the Lions.

In what universe does that make sense? Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson ran well. He entered Sunday's action completing 52.6 percent of his 19 passes for 121 yards. Emmanuel Ogbah had two sacks.

They rushed for 201 yards and 6.1 yards per carry against a Detroit defense that came into the game giving up just 3.6 yards per carry.

Matt Prater kicked a 46-yard field goal before Abdullah's 8-yard scoring run capped a 90-yard drive to tie it.

It's too bad the guys on the field didn't get more help from the guy on the sidelines.
