Pole-sitter and playoff driver Ryan Blaney led the first 10 laps before losing the lead to Elliott. The Can-Am 500 is the final elimination race of the playoffs.

After Stage 1: Denny Hamlin entered Sunday's Can-Am 500 at Phoenix Raceway 19 points behind Brad Keselowski for the final transfer spot into the championship race.

During the ensuing pit stop, the jack on Hamlin's vehicle was dropped before all the lugnuts on the tire were secured. That put the Joe Gibbs Racing driver in primo position to earn his way to Miami, but late contact with Chase Elliott ended his day early.

After the red flag to extinguish the fire, Elliott started marching to the front and had his run-in with Hamlin.

Kyle Larson and Hamlin were stage winners in the first 150 laps of the race, with Larson taking the first 75-lap stage and Hamlin the second.

The fourth driver eliminated from the playoffs was Blaney.

Busch, the 2015 series champion, earned his spot in the Championship 4 by winning the Round of 8 opener at Martinsville Speedway. Keselowski finished 16th, and while Chase Elliott finished second, Keselowski's points advantage proved enough. The Manchester High School graduate would advance with a victory Sunday or by finishing in the points standings ahead of Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson.

Not long after winning the opening stage, Larson wound up in the garage, retired from the race because of an engine issue. Sunday's victory could easily be the last of his career, and next weekend's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway could be his last altogether.

Elliott finished second Sunday, failing to advance to the title race but was asked about nudging Hamlin out of the way.

In addition, Hamlin won the race off pit road and began Stage 2 as the leader.
