3 shot at Rancho Tehama School in Tehama County

Shooting near elementary school kills at least three; children among injured

At least 4 people were killed and almost a dozen people were wounded, including 3 young children, when a shooting broke out Tuesday at a school in rural northern California.

The shooting, which took place on Tuesday, has so far seen at least two young students wounded.

Several shots were fired at 8 a.m. local time at the Rancho Tehama School in Corning, located in rural Tehama County, Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told the San Francisco Chronicle.

It was "very clear" early on that "we had a subject that was randomly picking targets", he said. There are at least seven crime scenes related to the incident. Two shooter had a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns.

Flint said the neighbor had been shooting "hundreds of rounds" from large magazines. Mercy Medical Center in Redding received three patients, including one who also was transferred elsewhere, said Harter, whose company, Dignity Health, runs both hospitals.

The school is in the Rancho Tehama Reserve, about 130 miles north of Sacramento.

"We made it aware that this guy is insane and he's been threatening us", he said. About 100 students attend the school, which has kindergarten through fifth grades.

There are at least five scenes in and around the school that police are investigating.

Some students were transported to hospitals by helicopter, and others were moved to safe locations, the assistant sheriff's said. "That evolved into multiple victims and multiple shots at the school", the deputy said. A man says his roommate is among the victims in Northern California and that his neighbor was the gunman.

The shooting spree began at a home and ended at the school, KCRA reported.
