Sessions denies being influenced by Trump to investigate Hillary Clinton

Sessions Leahy

In October, Sessions testified to the Senate that he did not have any "continuing exchange of information" with Russian operatives - and that he wasn't "aware of anyone else [on the Trump campaign] that did".

Or, so Sessions tells the House Judiciary Committee.

Republicans are pushing for further investigation into the Uranium One deal and allegations of corruption involving the Clinton Foundation.

What if Sessions says he forgot about Papadopoulos' remarks? "And I have not been improperly influenced and would not be improperly influenced".

"'Looks like' is not enough basis to appoint a special counsel", Sessions said. "The president speaks his mind". The people elected him. But it was a form of chaos every day from day one.

Sessions, who faced tough questioning from committee Democrats on Tuesday, vigorously denied lying to congress about contacts with Russian Federation.

"You said one time that good people don't smoke marijuana", Cohen said, referring to statements Sessions made as a Senator a year ago.

"Hopefully they are doing something and at some point, maybe we are going to all have it out", Trump said.

Later, Sessions said more firmly, "At the meeting, I pushed back".

During an Oval Office meeting with the president on November 1, Pirro denounced Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his refusal to go after Clinton, who was Secretary of State when the deal was approved. In March, Sessions released a statement recusing himself. And he will be bracing for an onslaught of lawmakers' questions about how much he knew of that outreach during last year's White House campaign.

Jeff Sessions's memory works in mysterious ways.

The appearance before the House Judiciary Committee follows a guilty plea from one Trump campaign aide who served on a foreign policy council that Sessions chaired, as well as statements from another adviser who said he'd advised the then-GOP Alabama senator about an upcoming trip to Russian Federation. "After reading his account, and to the best of my recollection, I believe that I wanted to make clear to him that he was not authorized to represent the campaign with the Russian government, or any other foreign government for that matter". Sessions refused to directly answer. "I have always tried to answer the questions fairly and accurately". "That is a lie".

Sessions has faced repeated questions from senators about his role in the campaign and the investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. election.

Sessions' testimony about the independence of the DOJ stands in contrast with a letter the department sent to the House Judiciary Committee on Monday. He then faced the Senate intelligence committee about the inconsistencies over the summer.

But that narrative has been challenged by a pair of recent events, most notably a guilty plea from George Papadopoulos, who last month admitted in court to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his own foreign contacts. Sessions supervised the advisory group on which Papadopoulos sat and reportedly rejected his suggestion for Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet. Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration about the Mueller probe and publicly criticized Sessions, stoking speculation he might be fired.
