Trump admin. to reverse ban on elephant trophies from Africa

Trump administration thinks it's ok to hunt African lions and elephants and bring their heads to the country.

In criticizing the decision, the Humane Society of the United States called the ban on Zimbabwean elephant imports reasonable because Zimbabwe is "one of the most corrupt countries on Earth".

It said the two countries had developed robust conservation programmes that would enhance the survival of African elephants, the world's largest land animals.

African elephants are classified as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, but a statement from the US Fish and Wildlife Service said that reversing the ban on trophies was meant to help elephants "by putting much-needed revenue back into conservation", as hunters will pay a large amount of money for the permits.

The Trump administration plans to allow hunters to import trophies of elephants they killed in Zimbabwe and Zambia back to the United States, reversing a ban put in place by the Obama administration in 2014, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service official confirmed to ABC News today.

In Zimbabwe, according to the Safari Operators Association, annual revenue this year could be as much as $130 million (€110 million), mainly from the U.S. market.

Safari Club International President Paul Babaz said in a statement, "These positive findings for Zimbabwe and Zambia demonstrate that the Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes that hunting is beneficial to wildlife and that these range countries know how to manage their elephant populations".

Fast forward to Trump's regime: animals killed between January 21, 2016 and the end of 2018 will be allowed to be imported in the country.

"What kind of message does it send that poor Africans who are struggling to survive can not kill elephants in order to use or sell their parts to make a living, but that it's just fine for rich Americans to slay the beasts for their tusks to keep as trophies?" he wrote. Opponents posted pictures of U.S. President Donald Trump's sons Donald Jr. and Eric, who are avid hunters, posing with the cut-off tail of a slain elephant and other dead wild animals on Twitter.

But Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who installed the Big Buck Hunter arcade game in the department's employee cafeteria, is intent on promoting hunting. As a result, the number of African elephants has shrunk from about 5 million a century ago to about 400,000 remaining.

Since 2001, Zimbabwe's elephant population has reportedly declined, while elephant population in Zambia has also declined in some regions.

The news came the same week Zimbabwe had a coup that left its president, Robert Mugabe, under house arrest. The U.S. embassy there has advised Americans there to "limit unnecessary movements". "With tanks in the streets, whoever is actually running the Zimbabwe government just can't be trusted to protect elephants from slaughter by poachers".
