Turkey's Erdogan takes aim at central bank independence

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation apologized to Turkey in writing following the incident. The five officers said that they feared being arrested and tortured in Turkey.

NATO's secretary-general apologized to Turkey on Friday over military exercises in Norway during which Turkey's founding leader, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and the current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, were reportedly depicted as "enemies".

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg issued a statement saying: "I apologize for the offense caused".

According to reports, the Norwegian official reportedly created a dummy military chat account and named it "Erdogan", and called "Erdogan" a collaborator.

Erdogan said that Ankara had withdrawn its 40 troops from the exercise in protest, adding: "It's not possible to have this kind of alliance". After Turkish officers confirmed the incident, the technician was dismissed from duty.

Insulting his memory is a criminal offence in Turkey that is punishable by jail. It is not clear what maneuvers Erdogan was referencing.

Ankara views the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a decades-long insurgency in Turkey and is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union.

The Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zajarova, said that some testimonies indict the US military and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO, for supporting the Islamic State group in Afghanistan.

Its Western allies have been particularly troubled by a deal for Ankara to purchase an S-400 air defence system from Russian Federation and the cooperation between Ankara, Moscow and Tehran on the Syria crisis.

"Turkey is an important ally in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, we value our good cooperation". "It will be for the Norwegian authorities to decide on any disciplinary action", he also said.

Stoltenberg later passed on the apology in person to Akar at a meeting in Halifax, the Turkish army said. "North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has been in contact with the Norwegian authorities on this issue".
