Oscar Pistorius Prison Sentence Increased

Prosecutors had argued that Pistorius failed to show genuine remorse over the killingMore

The Paralympic athlete shot dead Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013 when he fired four times through the door of his bedroom toilet.

"The sentence of six years' imprisonment is shockingly lenient to a point where it has the effect of trivializing this serious offense", he added.

The State had appealed to the court against the leniency of the initial six-year jail sentence.

Previously, the six-time Paralympic gold medallist had made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics, in 2012 in London, running on prosthetic "blades".

"They feel there has been justice for Reeva". That conviction was overturned and replaced with a murder conviction by the Supreme Court in 2015.

The ruling added that Pistorius "displays a lack of remorse and does not appreciate the gravity of his actions".

Attorney Marius du Toit, a legal expert in South Africa, told News 24 he thought the 13 years was "a heavy sentence".

There was outrage across South Africa in 2014 when he was sentenced to five years for culpable homicide, which is essentially the same as manslaughter, and only served 10 months before he was released on house arrest.

The Organisation Justice for Victims tweeted that 13 years was "still no justice".

Pistorius' lawyers have just one avenue open to them if they want to challenge the new sentence handed down by the Supreme Court, and that is to appeal to the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa.

But even though State prosecutors managed to get it upgraded to murder, only one extra year was added to the sentence.

Oscar Pistorius in his murder trail at the High Court in Pretoria on 6 July 2016.

Murders usually earn a minimum sentence of 15 years in South Africa, but the judge said Pistorius had been vulnerable on his stumps, and had tried to save Steenkamp's life after shooting her.
