Black Friday online sales rise, but footfall dips

The NRF, whose overall production sales data is strictly observed every year, is scheduled to release Black Friday, Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday sales numbers on Tuesday.

"People think retail is a nightmare, but it's not", said Tracy Ferschweiler, a Wal-Mart market manager who oversees seven stores around NY and New Jersey.

Commerce marketing firm Criteo said that 40 % of Black Friday online purchases were made on mobile phones, up from 29 % from a year ago.

"There has been a significant amount of debate surrounding the shifting importance of brick-and-mortar retail, and the fact that shopper visits remained intact on Black Friday illustrates that physical retail is still highly relevant and, when done right, profitable", said ShopperTrak Senior Director of Advisory Services Brian Field in a statement.

So far, the reports from retailers have been positive, and it looks like this is going to be a strong holiday season. Black Friday online sales totalled at least $3.54 billion by 8 p.m. EST (01:00 Saturday GMT), up 15.6% from a year ago, according to Adobe Analytics, which measures transactions at the largest 100 United States web retailers.

"The million pound question on everyone's lips now is how will Christmas shopping fare in the wake of the Black Friday promotional campaigns".

"People want to start getting into the holiday spirit and enjoy the concept of shopping and the holidays", he said.

The growing online shopping trend has forced the toy chain Toys R Us and apparel retailers True Religion, The Limited, Rue21 and Payless Shoe Source to file for bankruptcy in 2017.

The heavy spending continued on Cyber Monday, which was expected to be the biggest online shopping day in history with $6.6 billion in sales, compared to $5.6 billion a year ago. Fundivo, a small business loan adviser, found that by 2015, 49 percent of Americans said they have shopped on Cyber Monday.

And they just keep buying - online. As of 10 a.m., sales had reached $840 million, a 17% increase from a year ago. Earlier on Friday, Macy's CEO Jeff Gennette told The Associated Press said he was pleased with the kickoff to the season. She's been a regular Sears customer for years, but feels like the selection has gone downhill. "Now I can buy things in Wal-Mart-they are cheaper and last longer".
