Padmavati Controversy: The Movie Gets Banned In Bihar

"They are violating the principle of rule of law", the court said further observing, "We say nothing more, nothing less for the time being".

Padmavati has been banned in five states in India, but the Supreme Court on Tuesday, while dismissing another petition to stop the release of the movie outside of India, advised the Chief Ministers to refrain from commenting on the movie as it will create a prejudice against it.

Padmavati director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) chief Prasoon Joshi have been summoned by a parliamentary panel to present their views on the ongoing controversy over the film.

The original release date of the movie was December 1 but due to the controversy, the makers have deferred it indefinitely.

The Lok Sabha Committee on Petitions had sought a report from the information and broadcasting ministry and the censor board after C P Joshi and Om Birla, two BJP MPs from Rajasthan, filed a plea on "objectionable content" in the film before the panel. However, the whole movie was shot in 2D, but the makers have chose to convert the movie into a 3D after they got a positive feedback on the 3D trailer.

Bhansali has also been questioned on why he screened the movie for the media before getting the CBFC clearance. There are historians which are also divided on whether the Rani Padmini really existed. Our clock has stopped now, we are just waiting and waiting.

"There is no intention to do so, as of now", he said, informing the court that it would harm the movie's business interest if it is screened overseas before release in India.

The judges reiterated that it is the prerogative of the national censor board to review the film and make a decision on whether it is suitable for screening.

Bhansali's magnum opus, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, has been facing protests from various groups, especially from Shree Rajput Karni Sena, for allegedly tampering historical facts.
