Qualcomm files new patent complaints against Apple

Qualcomm files new patent complaints against Apple

This case between Qualcomm and Apple over patents is part of an extended legal war between the two firms.

"Apple began seeking those patents years before Qualcomm began seeking the patents it asserts against Apple in this case", Apple said in its complaint.

The Apple law suit comes after Qualcomm sued it last July for using elements of its battery life patents. Now, during Thanksgiving, this might have been confirmed after the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple relating to a possible foldable iPhone model. Apple denied the claims and alleged that Qualcomm's patents were invalid. The company alleges it owns minimum 8 battery life patents that Qualcomm has breached. These claims were first reported by Reuters. The iPhone maker states that it filed for battery life patents long before Qualcomm went through with its own battery life patents, and further states that Qualcomm's infringement claims appear "to be a blatant effort to take credit for the innovation of others".

The Snapdragon 800 and 820 aren't the newest processors Qualcomm is offering, but they are part of the company's processor lineup and have been powering high-end phones for some time now. Samsung and Google are not named in Apple's counterclaims.

The chipmaker on Thursday filed a request with the US International Trade Commission to ban the import and sale of certain iPhones that use Intel's modem.

While the royalty fight works its way through the courts, Apple is not making payments to Qualcomm, and Apple has told its suppliers - particularly Foxconn - to withhold payment to Qualcomm as well. In a connected case, Qualcomm charged the contract manufacturers that create Apple's devices, however Apple associated with the team to defend them.
