NC State coach Dave Doeren turns down Tennessee

Reports say Dave Doeren will remain head football coach at NC State. Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and UCLA have all filled their head coaching vacancies, while major openings are still looming at Arkansas, Nebraska, and Texas A&M.

State had been looking to lock up Doeren, whose existing contract runs through 2019, with athletics director Debbie Yow saying last month that school officials "want Dave here a long time and appreciate the progress that has been made".

Back in October, it was Wolken that reported Doeren and Yow were already negotiating a contract extension for the fifth-year coach.

Rumors went around that Coach Doeren was looking at possible coaching positions in MS and the University of Tennessee.

Tennessee reportedly had a deal in place with Schiano on Sunday morning, but it fell through by the end of the day after the university heard from the fan base, state representatives and local business owners. According to Wolken, Doeren even had his assistants cancel planned recruiting trips for that Sunday. He said he listened to the pitch from Tennessee because they have a respectable program, but decided NC State is the best option and he's fired up to stay.

N.C. State countered with an offer on Wednesday night, and Doeren woke up on Thursday, weighing the chance to make more money at Tennessee against the chance to build on his recent success with the Wolfpack.

The negotiations broke down, primarily over the length of the contract, before N.C. State had closed the regular season with a 33-21 win over North Carolina.

Sources tell us that he's chose to stay put, and that he was offered a higher salary and an extension on his contract.

That deal, however, appears to be on shaky ground, per Wolken. The two had discussions about the job, but no deal was reached, and Tennessee then moved on to Doeren. Brohm is also rumored to have a hefty buyout, which may have been a factor. That, however, is all hypothetical at this point.
