Police question settlers who killed Palestinian attacker during trip

A Palestinian protester hurls back a tear gas canister fired by Israeli troops during clashes in the village of Qusra near the West Bank City of Nablus Thursday Nov. 30

The Times of Israel reported Palestinian villagers began throwing stones on the crowd before an armed escort of the hiking group fired into the group of Palestinians.

A Palestinian man was shot and killed Thursday morning by a Jewish settler near the West Bank village of Qusra.

Palestinians identified the man as 47-year-old Mahmoud Zaal Odeh, killed in the occupied Palestinian village of Qusra, south of the city of Nablus.

The man who opened fire told Ynet that "dozens of Palestinians threw rocks and stones at us, we were in mortal danger and we tried to protect the children".

Almanam added that "one of the settlers shot him and he was gravely injured and died at a local clinic". They denied that any clash had taken place before the shooting.

IDF troops and police arrived at the scene shortly after the clash broke out and drove back both sides with riot dispersal equipment, including tear gas. They were later rescued by Israeli security forces.

Israeli forces Friday suppressed a weekly march in Nilin village, west of Ramallah, causing a number of Palestinians to suffocate, said an activist.

Palestine was seized by Britain following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire early last century, after which Arthur James Balfour, Britain's then foreign minister, gifted it to the "Jewish people".

Palestinian reports said Odeh was working in his field when the hikers arrived.

"The investigation is continuing and police units are searching for the suspect who fled the scene", said a police spokesman.

The Palestinians evacuated the murdered farmer to a Palestinian hospital in Nablus, but Israeli forces stormed the hospital and abducted the body, said Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian Authority official, who monitors settlement activity in the northern West Bank. Israel says majority were attackers and that others died in clashes with Israeli forces.
