Israel launches missiles at Syrian military base

The report claimed that some of the missiles had been intercepted by Syrian air defenses.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said the missile strike targeted a military base near Kesweh, south of Damascus.

The "blatant assault" led to material losses at the site in the countryside around the capital, it said, Al Jazeera reported.

The attack killed and wounded a number of Iranian soldiers, according to Al Qoraish, an Arab newspaper in London.

Earlier Tehran based Press TV reported that Syrian army has fired at least four surface-to-surface missiles at Israeli aircraft as the (Israeli) regime launched an attack against the western countryside of Damascus. In this way, Israeli officials claim that their strikes are counterterror operations as the resistance group is considered a terrorist organization under Israeli law.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously warned that Israel would in no way allow Iran to establish any military presence in Syria. Israel has also been providing medical treatment to the extremist militants wounded in Syria.

A Sky News Arabic report stated some of the missiles were fired from within Lebanon. In satellite images published by the BBC, several buildings that appear to be storage facilities - for vehicles or weapons - are seen along a staging ground, with other buildings, one of them appearing to be a headquarters, adjacent.

A report last month said that Iran was building a permanent military base in southern Syria.
