"The University of MS lacked institutional control and fostered an unconstrained culture of booster involvement in football recruiting", the NCAA said in a release.

In an email to HottyToddy.com on Saturday, Michael Thompson, Ole Miss' senior associate athletic director for communications and marketing, confirmed that the university had already reduced its scholarships by a total of 13 over a four-year period-that's a 15 percent reduction from the total of 85 scholarships and meets the NCAA's requirement.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions has extended Ole Miss' postseason ban for another year, among other penalties dealing with the 21 allegations against the football program.

Ole Miss had self-imposed both a bowl ban for this season and scholarship restrictions, but the NCAA added more to each element.

"It is simply not warranted and is based on fundamental flaws in the NCAA case in how the investigation was conducted", Vitter said.

The sanctions also included the "vacation of all regular-season and postseason wins in which ineligible student-athletes competed".

A postseason ban for the 2017 (self-imposed by the university) and 2018 seasons. "It's clearly an excessive punishment and we are outraged at the unfair characterization of our football program and university culture involving athletics".

They will have an addition one year bowl ban, in addition to the self-imposed one they are now serving, meaning no bowl games until 2019.

The stiffest penalty was for former staff member David Saunders, who received an eight-year show cause for helping arrange fraudulent ACT scores. Bjork said it could be several months before the NCAA appeals process plays out.

"The panel found the involved head coach failed to monitor the program, allowing his staff to knowingly commit a series of recruiting violations, submit false information on recruiting paperwork and not report known violations".

Former head coach Hugh Freeze did not receive a show cause. That decision means there probably won't be any closure to the more than five-year-old saga any time soon.

Chris Kiffin: Two years, during which "he must not participate in off-campus recruiting activities or hosting any meals for prospects or student-athletes".
