GM To Launch Self-Driving Vehicles In Big US Cities In 2019

GM's Self-Driving Cars to Be Ready for Ride-Sharing in 2019

"If we continue on our current rate of change we will be ready to deploy this technology, in large scale, in the most complex environments, in 2019", said GM President, Dan Ammann, during the conference call.

GM is trying to create self-driving cars that need minimal maintenance and upkeep, like aircraft that hold up well to constant use, Vogt says. GM said there still was much more hard engineering work to do. Waymo, the autonomous auto unit of Google parent Alphabet Inc., earlier this month said it's about to start chauffeuring people in Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV-supplied minivans without safety drivers manning the steering wheel.

Delphi, an automotive supplier, has said it expects commercial vehicles to be using its autonomous system in limited areas in 2019. GM believes it's too early to discuss branding, but the first cars will likely be versions of the Chevy Bolt EVs Cruise is testing now. Delphi recently bought autonomous software startup NuTonomy and is also partnering with BMW AG, chipmaker Intel Corp. and camera and visual recognition software maker Mobileye. Granted, Cruise has operated a pilot ride-sharing program for its employees in San Francisco for the past few months.

The ambitious timeline could place GM in an enviable position: with the unique ability to provide existing ride-hailing companies like Lyft or Uber with a growing fleet of autonomous vehicles or, better yet, to unleash their own service. However this announcement helps to solidify the industry speculation that autonomous vehicles will eventually be the sole vessels for ride-hailing services - and, if done strategically, automakers like GM can highly profit from the shift.

Because GM has software and sensor development, as well as manufacturing, it can roll out autonomous vehicles cheaper than competitors, the company said. By getting out there first, GM hopes to ride a rapid cost and technology improvement curve that will leave the competition far behind....

GM, like rival automakers and technology leaders including Alphabet Inc, has poured billions into autonomous vehicle research, although fully self-driving cars are a work in progress. After the afternoon presentation, shares of GM fell 1.8 percent to close at $43.04 while the broader markets ended higher.
