Marlins Have Framework Agreements To Trade Giancarlo Stanton

The Marlins have to wait for Stanton to inform them whether he would accept either trade.

Stanton, the 2017 home run champion, needs to waive his no-trade clause in order for a deal to go through.

That backed up another report, from ESPN's Buster Olney on Friday, that said Major League Baseball would only allow San Francisco and St. Louis executives to meet with Stanton's people if the Marlins said they were closing in on a potential deal.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, a trade is not expected to be completed on Sunday.

The Giants and Cardinals each showed trade interest in Stanton, dating back to before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline.

Between the Giants and Cardinals, Stanton might prefer San Francisco per Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. If the meetings had occurred while talks between the teams were still fluid, the Marlins would've risked losing leverage if Stanton agreed to be dealt to one team and not the other. Per MLBPipeline.com, those are the Giants' second-, third- and fourth-rated prospects, respectively. Heyman cited a source who said the Giants would "100 percent" be Stanton's preferred choice if he had to pick between them and the Cardinals. Their luxury-tax issues would complicate a potential trade for the slugger.

The Marlins are reportedly only willing to pick up $45 million of Stanton's contract to make the deal work.

Miami is looking to slash payroll and Stanton is owed $295 million over the next 10 seasons as part of his 13-year, $325 million contract.
