Services of 2 doctors in India terminated for declaring living baby dead

Delhi hospital terminates services of two doctors after a baby declared dead was found to be alive

On Thursday, a New Delhi mother gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl.

The girl was stillborn and the boy was in critical condition; soon afterwards, doctors pronounced him dead.

Earlier in the day, the family members of the newborn, who was allegedly declared dead along with his still-born twin by the hospital, staged a sit-in protest outside the hospital demanding a strict action against them.

Some six hours later and on the way to perform funeral rites, however, the parents reportedly noticed movement inside the polythene bag and discovered he was breathing. They opened the bag to find the live child.

Announcing the termination of the two doctors, the hospital said in a statement: "While the inquiry by the expert group which includes external experts from IMA is still in process, we have chose to terminate the services of the two treating doctors".

"I couldn't believe my eyes", said Praveen Mailk, the twins' grandfather to CNN.

"While the inquiry by the expert group which includes external experts from Indian Medical Association is still in process, we have chose to terminate the services of the two treating doctors", the hospital added. "The doctors at the [new hospital] told us that the boy has several infections because he was exposed to the environment and had been wrapped in plastic".

"We don't want to keep our baby at Max hospital". The Delhi Police registered a case of attempt to culpable homicide against the hospital. The decision was taken late at night by the hospital authorities after having an initial discussion with the expert committee group formed by the hospital. Cops are also probing Ashish's allegation that the hospital had asked them to pay Rs 50 lakh for keeping the baby in its nursery.

New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter on Friday to confirm the investigation while the state Health Minister Satyendar Jain described the incident as "shocking criminal negligence".
