Google Maps launches 2-wheeler mode in India

Google Maps’ new two-wheeler mode shows faster routes for beating traffic on your bike

This is a huge number and to address that, Google today announced a two-wheeler navigation mode for Google Maps, which is also an India-first feature. For users in India, though, soon to be followed by other countries, there is a fifth option: two-wheeler mode.

In India, some highways don't allow motorcycles on them either, so the new navigation routes will avoid those roads. Two-wheeler mode in Maps gives routes that use shortcuts not accessible to cars. "India is the largest two-wheeler market in the world, and the millions of motorcycle and scooter riders have different navigation needs than drivers of automobiles", said Caesar Sengupta, Vice President, Next Billion Users Team at Google.

It is also to be noted that estimated time of arrival (ETA) shown in "two-wheeler mode" is slightly less than that for the vehicle and other modes. The addition of a two wheeler mode adds more flexibility to Google maps.

Two-wheel navigation has been a much-requested feature for other mapping apps like Waze (also owned by Google) for years. It will also incorporate Voice Assistant capabilities, which is even more helpful for bikers. Mashable notes that Google Maps' motorbike routing feature will also offer users transit time estimates that are better suited to their vehicle type, helping them better estimate how long it will take them to get to their destination.

The two-wheeler mode is particularly helpful in cities like Pune, which has a high density of two wheelers. Since Indian roads are dominated by the two-wheelers and there are certain routes which can only accommodate them instead of cars, a feature like this is of great help to the two-wheeler commuters of the county. Moreso, one does not have to invest in a separate device, as it can be easily accessed form one's smart phone.
