Whom should CSK and Rajasthan retain for IPL 2018?

Chennai Super Kings

The salary cap for each team has been increased from Rs 66 crore to Rs 80 crore for the 2018 season, while Rs 82 crore and Rs 85 crore are allotted per side for the next two years.

CSK and RR were banned from the IPL for two seasons in July 2015 following some of their team owners' involvement in corruption. However in the meeting it was discussed that teams could retain not more than than three Indian and two foreign players. The swashbuckling cricketer from Ranchi in Jharkhand has played in 159 IPL matches scoring 3,561 runs off 2,604 balls at an average of 37.88.

Which means that CSK fans can expect to see MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina return to the team's ranks for IPL 2018.

In October this year, the IPL governing council floated a proposal, stating that CSK and RR can retain players who moved to Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions for two years following a draft. CSK and RR have the allowance to retain players from among those who played for them in the 2015 season and it is nearly certain that Dhoni will be back in CSK colours in the next season.

The IPL Governing Council, in its meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, has upped the player cap for the next three years.

According to the regulations, each franchise will be allowed a maximum of five players to be retained through a combination of player retention and Right To Match (RTM) cards.

An IPL franchise is eligible to secure up to 5 players by virtue of a combination of player retention (pre player auction) and Right to Match (during the auction), BCCI secretary Amitabh Chaudhary said in a statement.

► A franchise can secure a maximum of three capped Indian players and a maximum of two overseas players. "In a way, we have found a middle path (with the possibility of buying back five players through retentions and RTMs)", IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said after the meeting.

If a franchise retains three players, then the first player would cost Rs 15 crore, second Rs 11 crore and the third Rs 7 crore. If only one player has been retained, the salary cap will be Rs 12.5 crore.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had asked franchises as to how many players they would like to retain.
