A First Look at "X-Men: Dark Phoenix"

Jennifer Lawrence

Move over, Katniss Evergreen, because Sophie Turner, 21, is the new girl on fire.

That wouldn't typically be a big mystery, but the X-Men movies have hopped around a bit in the timeline, with one of the films rewriting parts of the timeline entirely. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the fourth movie in the series kickstarted by X-Men: First Class.

The upcoming film will follow the timeline of Days of Future Past, where Grey was alive and well, rather than her being dead at the ending of 2006's The Last Stand.

"[Mystique] has grown up a lot", states Jennifer Lawrence.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be released on November 2, 2018 - but there's a lot more X-Men centric stuff coming to our screens in the next few years. "I would call Dark Phoenix a drama", says Lawrence. The film opens with Charles Xavier landing the cover of TIME magazine and the X-Men are seen as national heroes. The team's latest mission sends them into outer space - where they're hit with a solar flare that awakens a powerful, and power-mad, force within Jean. EW states that the film takes place in 1992, 10 years after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. "This definitely passes the Bechdel test, and I don't know how many comic-book films can say that".

Chastain said the villain is "quiet" but "brutal".

Navigating the dual role was a challenge for Turner, who told EW she studied the ways mental differences manifest themselves to best portray the turmoil within Jean. Notably, the announcement does not include Evan Peters, who played Quicksilver in the last two X-Men movies. There's also a new close-up of Mystique's makeover, which can be found in the gallery below.

While the mutants will be apparently going to space in 2018, fighting for Sophie Turner's Jean Grey against the might of the Shi'Ar Empire, the real world has plenty of issues itself about equality and tolerance, and a figure that has grown increasingly popular with those wanting to be on the right side of history is Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Though he wrote the screenplay for Last Stand, he did not direct it, so this will be the director's debut in the storyline and it's something that he holds close to his heart.
