Google pulls out Youtube from Amazon devices, spat turns ugly

Google Starts Blocking YouTube on Fire TV, Echo Show

You can't play Google Music through your Echo or Amazon Music through your Google Home, for example, and until recently, Amazon Prime Video didn't have an official Android app.

"Adding voice experiences will unlock the next level of personalization and help us reach a new generation of consumers", said Tricia Nichols, Estee Lauder's vice-president of global consumer engagement, in a statement according to eMarketer.

Besides withholding Chromecast and the Home speaker from its store, Amazon has also rankled Google by declining to sell an internet-connected thermostat made by Nest, which is owned by Google parent Alphabet Inc.

'Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV. "We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon".

The dispute stems from YouTube's recent rollout of the Amazon products, which Google said lacked several features users came to expect. The Show, unveiled in May, lets you scan your calendar for things like appointments and view weather forecasts.

In happier news, both Amazon Echo and Google Home interactive assistants will be getting an app that turns them into Pikachu in 2018.

"It should be about users of Google and Amazon, not Google and Amazon", a person familiar with Google's thinking told CNET. Google's device is called Chromecast and has 36.9 million US users, according to research company eMarketer, while Amazon's Fire TV has 35.8 million users in the US. (GOOGL, GOOG), said Tuesday that it is pulling YouTube from some Amazon.com Inc. devices in retaliation for Amazon refusing to sell many Google products, escalating a battle between two tech titans as their businesses increasingly overlap.

If you tried to watch YouTube on an Amazon Fire TV this week, you probably encountered a disconcerting message: "Starting on 1/1/2018, YouTube will not be available on this device".

Amazon's Fire TV devices will also be affected.

Amazon said Google was "setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website", but said they hoped to resolve the dispute.

Chromecast, of course, competes with Amazon's Fire TV, but Amazon has prevented it from working with Amazon's popular Prime video app.

As the world's largest online retailer, it's no surprise that Google is so keen to be featured on Amazon's stock list.

One of Engadget's sources also claims that Google wants Amazon to start selling some of its products like the Chromecast and Google Home, but Amazon is reluctant to do so since those would directly compete with its Fire TV devices and Echo smart speakers.

Amazon did not immediately respond when asked if Apple TV will return to Amazon's online store now that it supports Amazon Prime. Amazon has sold that device for longer than the Echo Show, meaning more customers may now be affected.
