North Korean missile threat forced Singapore Airlines to reroute flights

Three chees North Korean leader Kim Jong Un celebrates after giving an order to test-fire the newly developed inter-continental ballistic rocket Hwasong-15

The airlines confirmed that crew of the CX893 flight has reported the suspected sighting of the missile - which Pyongyang said can hit targets "everywhere in the world" - when they were mid-flight.

Korean carrier Asiana Airlines also changed flight paths on some of its routes between Korea and the U.S. in 2010 in order to avoid the risk of being hit by an unexpected missile.

Channel NewsAsia found out that Singapore Airlines (SIA) has taken steps to reroute its Seoul-Los Angeles flights since July this year, following Pyongyang's July 27 missile launch into the Sea of Japan.

"At the moment, no one is changing any routes or operating parameters".

"The safety of our customers and crew is our number one priority and we continuously monitor the areas that we overfly", the spokesperson added.

Despite catching glimpses of the weapon-thought to be the deadliest missile in North Korea's arsenal-Cathay Pacific and Korean Air had not chosen to alter their routes as of Tuesday, according to a Bloomberg report.

At the latest launch on November 29, flight crews on planes run by airlines such as Korean Air and Cathay Pacific reported sightings of missile activity while in the air.

Korean Air pilots on two different planes also reported seeing flashes of light believed to be the North Korean missile when they were flying over Japan, airline spokesman Cho Hyun-mook said. North Korea likely chooses splashdown points for each stage that avoid airline routes, said Vipin Narang, an expert on nuclear strategy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Last Wednesday, a series of ballistic missiles that the North Korea regime claimed to be able to reach the United States mainland were launched in defiance of stern warnings and global sanctions.
