Pope, UN, EU, others criticize Trump for recognizing Jerusalem as capital

Recognizing the Rights of All People is Important: Pope

The pope told thousands of people at his general audience: "I can not keep quiet about my deep worry about the situation that has been created in the last few days".

US President Donald Trump will deliver his speech, expecting the US president to "recognize the reality" that Jerusalem has always been the capital of Israel and to declare the move to the US diplomatic mission from Tel Aviv and which for decades remained a reason of contention between Israelis and Palestinians.

In a tweet this morning, Cardinal Nichols urged people to "heed again the words of Pope Francis: Jerusalem is a "unique city" that has "a special vocation for peace".

"I can not remain silent about my deep concern for the situation that has developed in recent days", Francis said at his weekly general audience at the Vatican.

As Breitbart News reported on Tuesday, Arab, Muslim and European Union leaders have voiced their opposition to the move, suggesting it could create turmoil in the area.

Pope Francis stressed the importance of dialogue and "recognizing the rights of all people" in the Holy Land in an address to Palestinians.

West Jerusalem is where Israel's government is based, but Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Francis said he hopes that "wisdom and prudence prevail, in order to avoid adding new elements of tension to a global panorama that is already convulsed and marked by so many and cruel conflicts".

Before making his public comments, Francis met privately with a group of Palestinians involved in inter-religious dialogue with the Vatican.

Although the embassy move will take several years, Trump has directed the US State Department to "start the process".

British Prime Minister Theresa May said Jerusalem "should ultimately form a shared capital between the Israeli and Palestinian states".

Former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush had made the same promises during their campaigns, but once in office, they did not carry through with the move, citing its potential negative impact on Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
