Same-sex marriage bill looks set to pass Parliament

Same-sex marriage campaigners and volunteers cheer as they call on politicians to pass marriage equality legislation during rally outside Parliament House in Canberra, Australia, Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017.

The bill was introduced in parliament by the conservative government after Australians last month endorsed the reforms in a controversial voluntary postal vote.

One week ago the Senate also passed the same-sex marriage bill.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull urged lawmakers to approve the marriage bill by Christmas.

"What a day for love, for equality, for respect", said. However, achieving marriage equality today enables us to move forward stronger and more resilient, knowing that no Australian has to ever live through this experience again.

Additionally, the passing of the same-sex marriage law will be a strategic political win for Turnbull, who has been strongly opposed by his predecessor Tony Abbott, a staunch supporter of conventional marriage. Three-quarters of Australians, or nearly 12 million people (74.5% of the country's eligible voters), gave a resounding "yes" to the survey, and it prompted the Australian government to begin debating the issue in Parliament.

Australia's first same-sex weddings will not take place until at least January, however, because of a longstanding requirement for all Australian couples to provide a full month's notice of their intention to get married.

One of those who voted against the legislation, Queensland MP Keith Pitt, said he did not support the Bill because "I believe it does not adequately address the concerns of many in my electorate around religious freedoms, parental choice and the right for parents to raise their children as they see fit".

"This is a day for every Australian".

Or people who voted yes.

The bill passed with only five MPs dissenting.

"We thank all Australians for their support for saying yes, we thank all those who have campaigned for many years, for over 10 years, for fairness and equality".

They continued: "Because the separation into two legal institutions expresses that people with same-sex sexual orientation are not the same people with different sexual orientation".
