Chrome Apps to die everywhere but Chrome OS

Google's Progressive Web Apps will replace Chrome Apps next year

The email confirms that Chrome Apps won't be found anymore for users on Windows, Mac, and Linux and that Google intends for Progressive Web Apps to replace Chrome Apps.

Google's Chrome Remote Desktop has emerged as a major Teamviewer alternative considering its ease of use and Google compatibility.

Google has released the latest iteration of Chrome and it adds a nifty new "site isolation" feature that protects you in the event a site in one browser tab crashes.

Users who installed the apps before can use them until the first quarter of 2018. The more powerful Chrome Apps were "packaged apps", which could run in the background and access hardware like USB ports.

With site isolation, Chrome can now render content for open websites in an individual process that is kept separate from other pages.

Chrome 63 also includes a policy mechanism through which administrators can disable browser extensions based on their required permissions.

Google wants to throw yet another app type into the mix, though. They already work on Chrome for Android, so once Google is done here, PWAs would be the only Chrome app type to work across desktop and mobile.

Now Google announced that users can no longer have access to the Web Store and cannot install the apps through the Chrome Web Store. And TLS 1.3 makes for a faster and more secure experience, with plans to bring it to the entire web in 2018. This move comes when the company is pushing towards Progressive Web Apps. Google also said that it would eliminate the complete functionality in the Q1 2018 probably after the launch of PWA. For those wondering if Apps will be completely removed from all Google devices fret not, Google Apps will still be available to Chrome OS-powered devices such as Chromebooks.
