In first, United States presents its evidence of Iranian weaponry from Yemen

Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the UN.

Under a U.N. resolution that enshrines the Iran nuclear deal with world powers, Tehran is prohibited from supplying, selling or transferring weapons outside the country unless approved in advance by the U.N. Security Council.

The missile fired at Riyadh was a rather feeble and ineffective response to the continuing air assault on Yemen by a Saudi-led coalition that has turned a civil war sparked by tribal disgruntlement into one of the world's biggest current humanitarian disasters.

Iran says the allegations are "unfounded, irresponsible and provocative".

Since President Donald Trump has done his best to infuriate the petulant dictator of the neighboring country to the north, according to the article, Team Trump now questions the wisdom of sending US athletes to the games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, apparently concerned that North Korea could use the presence of American athletes there to justify an attack on the games.

Richard Nephew, a former USA government specialist on sanctions and a senior research scholar at Columbia University's School of worldwide and Public Affairs, said there were few options for imposing new sanctions or other measures on Iran, at least in the United States.

"This purported evidence, put on public display today, is as much fabricated as the one presented on some other occasions earlier".

These accusations seek also to cover up for the Saudi war crimes in Yemen, with the USA complicity, and divert global and regional attention from the stalemate war of aggression against the Yemenis that has so far killed more than 10,000 civilians, displaced three million, crippled Yemen's infrastructure and health system and pushed the country to the brink of largest starvation the world has seen for decades, as the United Nations has warned.

"Following a series of baseless accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran in the past 10 months, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations once again today took the same line accusing the Iranian government of supplying the missile that hit Saudi Arabia on 4 November - an accusation that we categorically reject as unfounded and, at the same time, irresponsible, provocative and destructive".

This in itself does not necessarily contravene the deal, however, as the agreement does not explicitly forbid ballistic missile production or distributing arms.

Reza Marashi, research director for the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), pointed out that the United Nations report Haley cited as "devastating" proof against Iran has not even been completed, and thus can not possibly amount to "irrefutable" evidence.

AP reported that while Guterres said in the report that Iran's missile activities may run counter to a that non-binding provision of the deal, he said overall Iran has complied with the agreement, which curbs Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. "Only Iran makes the Qiam", Seal said.

Haley and other officials said there were two reasons the United States knew the missiles could have only come from Iran.

Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of smuggling missiles to the Houthis through ports used to deliver humanitarian aid and food shipments to Yemen.

Haley said the missile parts bear markings showing they originate in Iran and that they have technical specifications specific to Iranian-manufactured weapons. On Wednedsday, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the world body was investigating Iran's possible transfer of ballistic missiles that may have been used in launches aimed at Saudi Arabia on July 22 and November 4. The UN has revealed in a report that these missiles appear to have been designed by Iran. Haley's other assertion that "it's hard to find a conflict or a terrorist group in the Middle East that does not have Iran's fingerprints all over it" also echoed Powell's charge that "terrorism has been a tool used by Saddam for decades" and that the Iraqi leader "provides haven and active support for terrorists".

The weapons systems on display were retrieved from battlefields in the Middle East by USA partners in the region - primarily Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Seal said.

The secretary general said Iran had called Israel's claim of a marked target "a sheer falsehood". In the weapons the US inspectors did come some USA components though they would not say exactly which components they were. At least 14,000 people have been killed or wounded since the Saudi-led offensive against the Houthis in neighboring Yemen began in March 2015.
