Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull announces cabinet reshuffle

As his predecessors have done Brandis will live rent-free at Stoke Lodge, a taxpayer-funded $30 million five-bedroom mansion near Buckingham Palace in London

Mr Porter's expected from Social Services to Attorney-General - he is a former treasurer and attorney-general in the Western Australian Parliament - will trigger further changes to the cabinet, and the outer ministry.

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced his new leadership team, awarding Senator Michaelia Cash a brand new senior cabinet role just weeks after her office's involvement in the AFP raids scandal.

The move comes as Mr Turnbull ends the year with the Coalition trailing a two-party preference vote of 53 per cent to 47 per cent - the same as last year's Newspoll.

The revamp will see Attorney-General George Brandis be replaced by Christian Porter, Turnbull told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

Nationals deputy leader Bridget McKenzie will be one of five new faces welcomed into cabinet as Minister for Sport, Rural Health and Regional Communications. Finance minister Mathias Cormann will also add Special Minister of State to his responsibilities, taking over from senator Scott Ryan who became Senate president after Liberal senator Stephen Parry was ruled ineligible over citizenship issues.

Nationals MP Darren Chester has been dumped as Infrastructure Minister with little-known Queensland backbenchers David Littleproud and John McVeigh taking his place.

A third vacancy is expected with Industry, Innovation and Science Minister Arthur Sinodinos - who is battling cancer - to step down.

"We wish him all the best in his recovery", Mr Turnbull said.

'Will no doubt draw his fat six-figure parliamentary pension and bank his six-figure salary for his new job at the same time.

He will exit on a high note, after almost 18 years in Parliament, having helped lead the case for the historic legalisation of same-sex marriage and having introduced a sweeping package of laws created to curb foreign interference in Australia's democratic systems and processes.

Attorney-General Brandis, 60, is reportedly set to quit the Senate and take up the top diplomat role in London - triggering a cabinet reshuffle before Christmas.

The government is already facing criticism for failing to boost the number of women in cabinet.
