Apple Inc. (AAPL) AirPods Are Sold Out Until After New Years

Apple reportedly working on “upgraded” AirPods for launch during 2018

Apple is planning to launch upgraded AirPods in the second half of 2018, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

While the report didn't provide very many details surrounding the new wireless earbuds, it's believed the second-generation AirPods will include a "smaller quartz component", with the new AirPods will continue to be assembled by Taiwanese manufacturer Inventec. Though it seemed that Apple had finally managed to address and fix early AirPod production issues, it now appears that AirPod orders placed today won't ship until January of 2018.

The analyst predicts that the upgraded AirPods will come with hardware improvements. It would be weird for Apple to start selling a new charging case mere months before refreshing the full product. What's more likely is that AirPods are such a popular holiday gift that Apple simply can't keep up with demand.

With an AirPods 2 launch date coming late next year, it's possible that they will be intended for use with the next generation of phones. We'll let you know when the accessories become available. Unfortunately for those on the hunt, the AirPods now read "deliveries from January 3" on the Apple Store.
