Ryanair to meet with union today to avoid tomorrow's pilot strike action

On Sunday, the airline's pilots called off a planned strike after the Irish carrier's management agreed to recognize the trade union "Impact" who is acting at the pilot's representatives.

In a statement issued last night, Impact said it has agreed to meet Ryanair management tomorrow evening, but stressed that it is available to meet sooner.

Since being founded in 1984, Ryanair have never recognised pilot unions.

Pilots' union IMPACT has said there is an urgent need to end the uncertainty.

Speaking after the talks, Ryanair's Chief People Officer Eddie Wilson said he is pleased with how they went.

Today marks the first-ever meeting with a union since the airline was founded over three decades ago.

"We think this is disappointing given all that's been said in the media over the last five days by the company".

The airline's CEO Michael O'Leary commented on the move: "Christmas flights are very important to our customers and we wish to remove any worry or concern that they may be disrupted by pilot industrial action next week".

A company spokesman said: "It will lead on in the new year to meetings with other EU pilot unions, and cabin crew unions in due course as well".

"Recognising unions will be a significant change for Ryanair, but we have delivered radical change before, most recently when we launched Ryanair Labs and our highly successful Always Getting Better customer improvement programme in 2013".

Ryanair pilots chose to call off the industrial action after the airline caved in to demands and agreed to recognized unions, a decision that totally contravened their previous 32 year-long stance on unionship.

UFO chairman Alexander Behrens welcomed Ryanair's willingness to talk to pilots, but warned it could be an attempt to avert strikes in several European countries over the busy Christmas season. "We're decisive in it", he said.
