Apple might be slowing down your old iPhone on objective

Apple Sued Slow Your Roll ... Not Our Old iPhones!!!

Apple said Wednesday that iPhones with older batteries may operate more slowly thanks to a software feature from updates beginning previous year, but said it was meant to prevent sudden shutdowns of the phones, not to encourage users with older phones to upgrade. Here, a user claimed to have made their iPhone 6S faster after he replaced its battery.

Apple's point is that if an iPhone tries to draw more power than the battery is capable of, it will suddenly shut down, as many did before last year's update.

Here's how Apple puts it in its statement describing what's going on: "Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices".

Apple's statement went on to say, "Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions". He specifically notes the iPhone 6s and 7 who received upgrades to iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2 respectively that introduced the slower speeds.

In a comment from the company provided to TechCrunch, an Apple spokesperson confirmed that the power of its older generation processors are indeed capped, but it's done to preserve the longevity of the devices rather than kill them off.

Reddit user TeckFire first posted to the /r/iPhone subreddit, showing two scores from Geekbench: one from before they replaced their battery, and one from after. Daring Fireball's John Gruber also addressed this belief saying, "I know for a fact that the widely-held belief that Apple booby-traps two-year-old iPhones drives Apple employees - ranging from engineers to senior executives - nuts, because the truth is the opposite".

Consumers will otherwise be encouraged to download new versions of iOS that will only require more processing power, which will slow things down. And some of those users wondered whether, in a bid to boost battery life, Apple was throttling processor performance.

In the end, Apple's decision to throttle performance on iPhones to cope with degraded battery performance seems like a sound practice.

After all, rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan - and most Apple products have a rechargeable battery built-in.

If you've ever thought that your aging iPhone got a lot slower after updating iOS, Reddit users and the CEO of benchmarking app Geekbench say it's not just in your head.

Apple has tried to remain cognizant of the health of batteries in iOS devices.
