According to the Census Bureau, Illinois lost 33,700 people between July 2016 and July 2017.

The agency says that's about 37,000 more people living in the state. That's an increase of 0.65 percent.

The top 10 most populous states, in order, are: California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina and MI. Three states that had been losing population in the previous year, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Vermont, saw slight increases.

IL was just one of eight states in the nation to lose population between mid-2016 and mid-2017, with much of it due to people leaving for other states, according to new estimates published Wednesday by the federal government.

Although the mining industry, including oil and gas extraction, in Wyoming added over 1,000 jobs from mid-2016 to mid-2017, almost all other sectors of the state's economy still saw job losses, led by construction and government.

Following Idaho in the top 10 were Nevada (2.0 percent), Utah (1.9), Washington (1.7), Florida and Arizona (tied at 1.6) and Colorado, Texas, District of Columbia and OR (tied at 1.4). Only West Virginia has seen more consecutive years of population decline, with five. In 2017, 38.0 percent of the nation's population lived in the South and 23.8 percent lived in the West.

Danbury's population of 84,922 people posted the fastest growth, gaining 335 residents between 2015 and 2016, and growing by 5.1 percent since 2010.

Meanwhile, in neighboring states such as Idaho, Colorado and Utah, the labor market continued to expand, which drew a number of people away from Wyoming.

The Census Bureau released on Wednesday the latest population estimates by state.

Looking at the numbers in a different way, Texas leads in the numeric increase of residents, adding 399,734 people to its population over one year, with a total population of 28.3 million.

However, net worldwide migration decreased 1.8 percent - the first drop since 2012 to 2013.

The world population was listed at more than 1.44 billion, with China, India, the U.S., Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Russia and Japan making up the top 10 most populous countries, in order.
