"Pak Army on Saturday afternoon fired unprovoked on forward posts in Barta Galla area of Chingus in Bhimber Gali sector of Rajouri and violated the ceasefire", official sources here said.

Five soldiers including a Major suffered injuries and evacuated to military hospital.

Joshi said Army retaliated strongly and effectively to the ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops. The spokesman said that Major Mohrarkar Praful Ambadas, Lance Naik Gurmail Singh, Lance Naik Gurmeet Singh and Soldier Pargat Singh lost their lives during the ceasefire violation.

Four soldiers - three Lance Naiks and a Major of the 120 Infantry Brigade - were killed while another one was injured.

A number of BAT attempts have also been foiled by the forces even as the Army has issued clear instructions to the units on the border that they should strike Pakistani posts trying to push terrorists into India or preparing for any ambush against Indian soldiers.

Hailing from Bhandara in Maharashtra, Major Moharkar Prafulla Ambadas, 32, is survived by wife Avoli Moharkar. Meanwhile, the army said in a statement that Indian soldiers have responded silently.

Following the incident, heavy cross-border firing and shelling was reported at several locations along the border.

Two other personnel also sustained injuries in the firing.

Kashmir, a Muslim-majority Himalayan region, is held by India and Pakistan in parts and claimed by both in full.

In the past, the Indian army has blamed a combination of the Pakistani army's border action team and militants for carrying out operations along the Line of Control.

The two countries have fought three wars - in 1948, 1965 and 1971 - since they were partitioned in 1947, two of which were fought over Kashmir.

He said the chief minister had conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the families of the slain soldiers.

Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh also paid tributes to the slain soldiers.

According to official figures over 880 violations of 2003 ceasefire accord have taken place along the LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir in 2017, killing 34 people.
