TJ Vasher catches TD in Tech's bowl loss

USF scores late TD, wins wild Birmingham Bowl over Texas Tech

It's a tale of two halves as the South Florida Bulls (10-2) come from behind to beat Texas Tech (6-7) in a shootout in the Birmingham Bowl.

The Bulls, who are 21-4 the past two seasons, won last year's Birmingham Bowl on Flowers' 25-yard touchdown pass in overtime against SC.

USF tied it up late in the second quarter, after Quinton Flowers hooked up with Tyre McCants on the 21 yard touchdown. Flowers finished the game with 311 yards through the air, 106 yards on the ground thanks to several key scrambles and five touchdowns.

Flowers led the Bulls (10-2) to a second consecutive dramatic victory in the bowl game at Legion Field, throwing for a pair of touchdowns in the final 4:26 after struggling in the first half.

A play later, Shimonek threw to Coutee for a five-yard touchdown to put Tech up, 10-3, with 34 seconds left in the first quarter.

More details to come. It's a low scoring affair in the first half with a 10-10 halftime score. Flowers completed just 4 of 14 passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. It's now 10-3 Texas Tech. USF responded with an 11-play drive that covered 58 yards and ended with a 25-yard field goal from Emilo Nadelman.

The Red Raiders high tempo offense gets going after the second play in the third quarter when Kolin Hill forces Flowers to fumble the ball and Demarcus Fields comes up with it. Texas Tech's 28th takeaway of the season.

He got his 12th start of the season in the Birmingham Bowl and completed 32 of 59 passes for for 416 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

On offense for Texas Tech, it should be another lethal passing attack led by former Iowa transfer Nic Shimonek. Red Raiders go up 34-31, 1:31 left in the 4th. This time the Red Raiders couldn't seal the deal.

USF would tie the score at ten with 51 seconds remaining in the second quarter, as McCants caught the first of his two touchdown receptions.

Shimonek and the Red Raiders were far from finished and retook the lead, 34-31, on a 8-play, 85-yard drive that was capped with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Shimonek to T.J. Vasher with 1:31 left in the game.

Texas Tech took a 27-24 lead with just over five minutes to play with a 33-yard field goal by Clayton Hatfield, setting the stage for USF quarterback Quinton Flowers to try and deliver some last-minute heroics in his final college football game.

But the Red Raiders left Flowers and the Bulls too much time to strike back, and strike back they most certainly did.
