The President of Sengal, Macky Sall, also congratulated Weah on Twitter and wished him "much success".

"We will work to relax constraints to private investment, strengthen the business, legal and regulatory environment, and protect business profits, " he said.

Former soccer star George Weah has been declared victor of Liberia's presidential runoff vote held on December 26.

Celebrations have begun in Liberia as former FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah is set to be declared the victor of the West African nation's presidential election.

He is set to succeed Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female president, in what will be Liberia's first democratic handover in decades.

Buhari issued a statement Friday that also commended the Liberian people "on the peaceful conduct of the historic presidential runoff election".

Weah replaced Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as president, who was a joint recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for fighting for women's rights. "We have a lot to do to accelerate the construction of Africa's future".

Their Coalition for Democratic Change party received 61.5 percent of the final tally, beating Vice President Boakai's Unity Party which got 38.5 percent of the votes, NEC chairman Jerome Korkoya said.

"Those chosen to serve will and must be dedicated to the ideas of grassroots social transformation". Weah's critics have said his brief experience in politics will be a challenge for the nation.

Liberia's election run-off has been declared free and fair.

Though voter turnout for Tuesday's runoff was low, he drew support from the younger generation, which makes up a majority of Liberia's population of 4.6 million people.

Weah's rags-to-riches story has been an inspiration to many supporters who call him "King George".

- He defeated the country's incumbent Vice President to emerge victor of the country's presidential run off election.

"Some people do not believe that Ambassador Weah has what it takes to perform as President, but they should wait and see; the man will surprise them, " he said.

Thirty-four-old Lawrence Menden, an IT professional, said he had no doubt in the ability of Weah to "take Liberia out of the woods".
