Rick Smith to take leave of absence

Smith began working for the Texans in 2006, becoming the league's youngest general manager at 36 years old.

According to a report from the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson, the relationship between general manager Rick Smith and coach Bill O'Brien is "toxic" and "dysfunctional," which could lead to changes in Houston this offseason. I am eternally grateful to the McNair family for their unwavering support during this trying time.

Alex Marvez of Sporting News reported Sunday that Texans head coach Bill O'Brien was set to force owner Bob McNair to choose between keeping him or Smith for 2018 and beyond.

The Giants have made it clear they would like to hire a new coach with head coaching or significant coordinator experience, and O'Brien has both. "This was an extremely hard decision for me to make as I love this organization and every member of this team bath on and off the field". They may want to hire someone who's familiar with O'Brien and has a similar philosophy when it comes to personnel.

O'Brien and Smith had job-related issues in the past, but they continued to work together. But mitigating factors are the season-ending injuries that led to the loss of key players like defensive end J.J. Watt, outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus and quarterback Deshaun Watson, who had emerged as a strong candidate for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during an early November practice.

His leave of absence comes after a hard 4-12 season for the Texans that brought rumors of a "toxic" relationship between Smith and coach Bill O'Brien. If Gaine ends up as the Texans' next GM, we wouldn't expect Smith back at any point.
