Gujarat IMA to oppose NMC bill, observe 'black day' today

IMA DELHI

Health services in the national capital may also get hit as the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) has also called for a "total shut down" of for 12 hours in all medical establishments in support of the IMA's strike.

However, emergency and critical services in all the government and private run hospitals have remained opened.

He said the slogan for the medical community is 'No to NMC (National Medical Commission).

The draft bill was introduced by Union Health Minister JP Nadda in Lok Sabha on Thursday to replace and subsume the MCI. The Ministry has also sought a compliance report from the hospitals. "A bill to regulate the medical education and medical practice without the concurrence of the medical profession will be a disaster", said a statement from the association. "Moreover the new norms will allow any foreign doctor to practice in India without any restriction as it does away with the screening test for foreign medical graduates", he said.

"The National Medical Commission in its present form is not acceptable to us".

Addressing a press conference here, Dr. Parthiv Sanghvi of IMA, said, "The IMA is against the National Medical Commission because it is a government body where 90 percent members will be nominated by the government".

Some other contentions with the bill include representation of just five states at any given point in time in the NMC, bringing the state medical councils under the NMC.

Dr Veeranna said the appointment of members to the commission is not by election, but rather by nomination by the Union government.

To register their protest against the new bill, more than 3,000 doctors from 14 districts staged a dharna in front of the Governor's house in Thiruvananthapuram. It also proposes to allow practitioners of alternative medicines like homoeopathy and ayurveda to practise modern medicine after attending a short-term "bridge course".
