"LG Set To Reveal 88" 8K OLED TV At CES 2018

LG has already shown a 77-in 4K OLED and developed a transparent and flexible 77-in OLED in June previous year.

LG is all set to wow consumers with some surprises at CES this year.

LG's main rival Samsung Display having long shifted its focus from OLED TVs to QLED TVs, LG Display is now the sole large-size OLED display maker in the world.

With this in mind, we'd absolutely love to give the new LG 8K OLED TV a spin with some high dynamic range 4K Blu-ray disc movies, and preferably with Dolby Vision HDR running just to spice things up even further on exquisite detail. Of course, it will take a while before 8K televisions become a standard.

More news: Unsafe wind chill temperatures in northern Montana

The 7680 X 4320 resolution screen will appear on the LG stand however you may have to wait till 2019 to get your hands on an 8K TV with the Japanese Olypics set to be one of the first major sporting events set to be shot in 8K using cameras developed by Panasonic. The 32-inch 4K monitor will be the first from LG to offer the company's advanced Nano IPS technology, which relies on "nanometer-sized particles to the screen's LED to absorb excess light wavelengths" and thus improve the visual experience on the display.

ChannelNews is also tipping that Samsung, Philips and several Chinese brands along with Japanese brand Sharp will reveal 8K TV's at CES.

All in all, LG's announcement comes at a time when the company is making a bigger push into OLED panels and ramping up its operations. So expect nothing less than that for a TV with double the resolution. Even if you were to pick up LG's very big display for a not-so-insignificant price, you'll be upscaling 4K content at best. OLED panels can easily overcome this issue as OLEDs are self-emissive and require much less power than backlit LCD panels.

As we said, this is an experimental 4K TV and really exists more for the sheer public relations value it creates, so don't hold your breath for 8K OLED hitting the shelves or Amazon listings any time soon in 2018.
