Unsafe wind chill temperatures in northern Montana

National Weather Service: Coldest air mass of the season to arrive this weekend; snow Thursday

A clear sky will allow for temperatures to tank, already well below zero by the mid evening hours across much of central IN, and ranging from -10 to -20 early Tuesday morning.

Its likely overnight lows will be in the teens to low 20s through the first week of 2018.

Heading into New Year's Day, we'll see a mix of sun and clouds with highs only in the mid-20s.

By midnight, temperatures are expected to be below zero with wind chills between -15 and -30. Otherwise, the main story line tonight will be the cold temperatures and low wind chills. The record low for January 2nd in Indianapolis is -12, which is very much in jeopardy. A few areas will pick up on a few snow showers. Those colder readings will work down into south Alabama, where wind chills on Monday night could range between 5-10 degrees. Places such as Boston are on track to break the longest stretch of below-20-degrees days in its recorded history. Clear and cold tomorrow night with low temps in the single digits to low teens and a negative wind chill.

As we close the chapter on 2017 and welcome in the new year, we'll do so on an extremely cold note. It depends on how quickly the next burst of arctic air moves into our area.
