Commissioner: 16 people hurt in NY fire will be OK

The fire this time

The Fire Department of NY says 16 people are hurt, four of them seriously, in a fire raging through a Bronx building.

The fire started in the Bronx building at about 5.30 a.m. and spread to multiple floors, express.co.uk reported.

It was the deadliest fire in New York City in more than 25 years, officials said, and left at least 14 families homeless.

Photos and video showed thick black smoke billowing from the building as firefighters doused water on the roof with outside temperatures hovering in the teens. The store is on the ground floor with apartments above.

When asked about the injured, Nigro said "They will all be OK, thankfully". But fire officials say almost two dozen people, including that man and his family, have been displaced by the blaze.

That same morning, a second fire burned, also at a multistory apartment building on Knox Place in the Norwood section of the Bronx.

"Our units arrived and were immediately faced with heavy fire", Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

The multi-storey building is situated on the corner of the Commonwealth and Bronx River avenues in Van Nest.

Over 200 firefighters battled the blaze.

This fire comes just days after 12 people were killed in the city's deadliest fire in more than a quarter-century.

All of the residents of the building were believed to have been evacuated as well.
