Amazon Brings Cooking Capabilities To Alexa Smart Home Skill API

Amazon is making it easier to bring Alexa to devices like headphones and smartwatches

However, it already notes that it's making "significant investments" in voice control, including a remote control, a mobile app and already-announced Alexa gear including an air conditioner and dehumidifier.

Amazon's smart home business has become the biggest in the market over the last two years thanks to its range of Echo smart speakers - all of which are powered by Alexa.

The tech giant has announced it is adding cooking capabilities to its Smart Home Skill API - the programming tools that make it possible to connect Alexa with internet-connected devices.

Amazon is being mocked online for the latest update to its smart personal assistant - Alexa can now control microwaves, saving people the mere "micro" seconds it takes to switch on the device after placing your food inside. This functionality will initially only be available to US-based developers but Amazon will be bringing the API to other parts of the world "soon".

Expect to see the cooking features in use very soon.

"Customers have now connected tens of millions of smart home devices to Alexa, including cameras, door locks, lights, entertainment systems, and thermostats. Customers can ask Alexa to set microwave cook times, modes, power levels, and more instead of using the traditional and often confusing microwave experience". Now you can build skills to enable customers in the U.S. to control their microwave ovens using Alexa. GE Appliances, Kenmore, LG and Samsung have also committed to working on skills for their own ovens and "more appliances".

The tech company has revealed it's adding microwave and oven control features to Alexa, giving it the ability to action requests such as "Alexa, please microwave for 1 minute on high". With the built-in cooking device controls in the Smart Home Skill API, you will make it easier for your customers to control your cloud-connected microwave.
