Android Malware Targets Over 230 Banking and Cryptocurrency Apps

New Android Malware targets 232 banking and e-commerce apps in India

The announcement was made on Wednesday, January 3, and according to the researchers, a malware named "Android.banker.A2f8a" is being distributed through a fake Flash Player app on third-party stores.

'Mobile malware such as the Android Trojan can mimic legitimate banking apps as well as notifications.

A new Android malware has been found that reportedly attacks banking applications.

The list also includes mobile passbook apps such as IDBI Bank mPassbook and Baroda mPassbook. The Flash Player is the favourite app especially for the cybercriminals because of its prevalence feature.

Like most URLs, deep links direct to a specific piece of content.

The fake app asks users for administrative rights immediately after setup and even if a user initially denies admin access, the app continues to show pop-up windows until the user accepts.

After the initial setup, the app runs in the background and looks for 232 particular apps (mostly banking and some cryptocurrency apps).

When the user enters the information, it isn't actually providing it to Uber; the malware is using the fake interface to steal the login information from the victim.

Uber users with Android smartphones are being targeted with malware that shows victims a fake version of the ride-hailing service, in order to steal their credentials.

What makes the malware particularly risky is that even if the user denies permission or administrative right or tries to kill the process on the device, "it keeps throwing continuous pop-ups until the user activates the admin privilege", said Mane. However, any data entered will actually be sent off to a remote server under the control of the malware's developers. The public relations contact said that systems were already in place to help users "detect and block" unauthorised login attempts using hijacked passwords. Hence it can get the OTP even though if we have kept two-factor authentication to our bank account.

Users are being advised by banks and internet security firms to avoid downloading any apps from third party app stores or any links provided in an SMS or emails.

The typical recommendations apply-Symantec's advice is to make sure your software is up to date, refrain from downloading apps from unfamiliar sites, pay close attention to the permissions that apps request, make frequent backups, and of course it pitches installing a mobile security app such as Norton.
