Letterman Nabs Obama as First Guest for New Netflix Show

David Letterman's new Netflix show premieres Jan. 12

Other notable guests on the show will be George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, Jay-Z, Tina Fey and Howard Stern.

Veteran former US talk show host David Letterman will return to television on January 12 in a new Netflix show where his first guest will be former US President Barack Obama, Netflix Inc. said on Friday. Letterman left "The Late Show" in May 2015 after almost 22 years on CBS including his 11-year run on NBC hosting "Late Night with David Letterman".

Letterman's interview with Obama will mark the former president's first television talk show appearance since he left office in January a year ago.

Time has apparently made the heart grow fonder as he prepares for his new show.

Obama has laid low since leaving the White House a year ago with the exception of a few public appearances and a radio interview with Britain's Prince Harry recorded in September and broadcast last month. In each hour-long episode, Letterman will conduct a long-form conversation with a single guest and explore topics of his own outside the studio.

"You never know when you might learn something", Letterman said of his new show. Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos told Variety that the company wants to increase its original offerings until they make up half of the service's entire library. It will be his first talk show appearance since leaving the White House in January of past year. "These are people that I admire".

Sarandos said he hopes Letterman's show will attract more subscribers.
