Lalu sentenced to 3.5 years Jail in fodder scam

RJD supporters raising slogans outside Lalu Prasad's residence in Patna on Saturday

After spending two months in jail, Supreme Court granted bail to Prasad in the first fodder scam case. A special court in eastern city of Ranchi found him guilty of embezzling around nine million Indian Rupees (around 140,000 USA dollars) during his chief ministerial term in eastern state of Bihar in early 1990s. The court also imposed Rs 5 Lakh fine on Lalu.

According to legal experts, Lalu would have been able to apply for bail immediately at the lower court itself if the quantum of sentence was less than three years.

Earlier in the week, Prasad's advocate filed a plea before the court seeking minimum punishment for the party supremo on health grounds. The court also slapped a ₹10 lakh fine on Mr. Prasad.

The punishment was handed down to 69-year-old Prasad by CBI court judge Shiv Pal Singh through videoconferencing since the RJD leader is lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail after being convicted in the case on December 23, CBI counsel Rakesh Prasad said. "Congress-RJD alliance will continue in Bihar", Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee acting president Kaukab Qadri said. "We are not going to be cowed down", Yadav's son Tej Pratap told reporters after the sentence.

The trial in the case was completed on December 13 in the special CBI court and 10 days later, he was convicted on December 23. The case pertained to fraudulent withdrawal of ₹84.5 lakh from the Deoghar district (now in Jharkhand) treasury during the period 1991-94. "It is the end of a chapter". "He was in jail for one year in this case, facing the case for last 20 years and never disobeyed the court", he added.
