McDonough bids farewell to Gruden during broadcast

5 Must See Holiday Light Displays in LA

Gruden had said earlier Saturday during a national broadcast of the AFC wild-card game between the Titans and Chiefs in Kansas City that nothing was official.

While the Raiders are widely expected to name Gruden their next head coach as early as next week, neither Gruden nor the team has confirmed those reports. He is reportedly signing a 10-year contract with the soon-to-be Las Vegas-based team worth $100 million.

Jon Gruden's presumptive last ESPN broadcast before becoming coach of the Raiders started with a farewell - even as Gruden declined to make it official. St. Louis won just nine games his first two years before breaking through with the Super Bowl title in the 1999 season behind quarterback Kurt Warner.

Prior to kickoff, broadcasting partner Sean McDonough congratulated Gruden on taking the Oakland Raiders' head coaching job. This is not the first time two brothers have been head coaches in the National Football League simultaneously. "He has to get used to Jon Gruden being his coach, but also being in his life on an everyday basis..." Overall, Gruden is 95-81 in 11 seasons.

Gruden, 54, is set to return to coaching after an absence of almost a decade.

Even with that said, however, this has the feeling of a farce to it, but then again, it would be the Raiders to be front and center in it. Gruden has vast football knowledge, but there is a good reason for his firing so many years ago. He led the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title over Oakland the following season.

This would not mark the first time the Raiders brought back a coach for a second stint.

Gruden previously coached the Raiders from 1998 through 2001, compiling a 38-26 regular-season record and a 2-2 record in two playoff appearances.
