Bolivia Slams US 'Clumsiness' at UNSC Meeting On Iran Protests

US faces criticism at Security Council meeting on Iran protests

The matter of whether the UNSC can exercise jurisdiction over the internal situation in Iran, that gave rise to mass demonstrations across the entire country with the death toll reaching over 50 and hundreds others injured or arrested by Iranian security forces, is debatable.

Echoing Iran's concern that the demonstrations were fueled by outside powers to promote regime change, Bolivia reminded world powers that "unilateral action, political interventionism, and regime change only ever lead to devastating humanitarian, social and economic consequences".

The state broadcaster showed pro-government rallies in several cities, starting with Amol, in the northern province of Mazandaram, with hundreds of people waving the Iranian flag and chanting slogans against the US and Israel.

Still, the United Nations charter empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to worldwide friction", and the USA wasn't alone in thinking the Iranian protests qualified.

"It is right and proper - indeed, our responsibility ... to assess whether a situation like this could become a threat to worldwide peace and security", British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said before the meeting. But tens of thousands have also reportedly taken part in pro-government rallies in recent days. Iran's Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo slammed the meeting as a "farce" and a "waste of time" and said the Council should instead focus on addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or the war in Yemen.

More news: Fire Risk: Some HP Laptops Need Battery Replacements

Lawmaker Mahmoud Sadeghi said that around 90 university students- 58 of them in the capital Tehran- have been detained since protests broke out, the semi-official ILNA news agency reported Saturday. The country has increasingly has blamed its foreign foes for fomenting the unrest. He pointed out that Trump has a history of making "belligerent" comments about Iran.

Trump's administration has denied having any hand in the demonstrations, saying they arose completely spontaneously.

The president's tweets have not called for violence or disruptive acts, but he has commended them. Moreover, with President Trump imposing a travel ban on Iranians and calling Iran a terrorist nation, his statement about respecting the right of Iranians "to express themselves" is just some pretty words.

China also described the meeting as meddling in Iran's affairs. "Another FP [foreign policy] blunder for the Trump administration". "It is a powerful exhibition of fearless people who have become so fed up with their oppressive government that they are willing to risk their lives in protest".
