Meet the Activists Who Walked the Golden Globes Red Carpet

Meryl Streep

Marking 29 years since her first Golden Globes red carpet, Best Actress nominee Meryl Streep will likely be wearing black for Sunday night's ceremony as part of the Time's Up movement.

The move is one of several initiatives by an organization called Time's Up, which a broad coalition of Hollywood women organized in the wake of reports exposing the entertainment industry as predatory.

Michelle Williams and Tarana Burke will also arrive together, with Tarana being the founder of the #metoo movement.

Emma Watson was accompanied by Marai Larasi, executive director of Imkaan, a British network of organizations working to end violence against black and minority women. As Meryl Streep emphasized during her appearance on the E! red-carpet pre-show, it's really about inclusiveness on all fronts and making sure women in all fields have a choice.

Susan Sarandon will bring Rosa Clemente, a political commentator and journalist who campaigns for media justice, promotes voting amongst youth of colour, and fights for justice for United States political prisoners. Poehler is with Sary Jayaraman, who advocates for restaurant workers; Dern is taking Mónica Ramírez, a Latina empowerment activism who focuses on sexual violence against farmworkers.

"Women in Hollywood have an opportunity to amplify the issues and shine a light on things".

Stone chose to walk the red carpet with Billie Jean King, who she plays in her nominated film, "Battle of the Sexes".

The Time's Up sexual harassment prevention initiative launched January 1 by Shonda Rhimes, Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone and other prominent Hollywood women includes, among other things, a legal defense fund for victims, legislative initiatives and a request that women wear black to the Golden Globes. "Every generation has to fight for equality and keep fighting for freedom forever", she said.

Laura Dern's date was Monica Ramirez, co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, "who wrote the attractive letter of solidarity in Time magazine", said Dern of how she connected with Ramirez, representing female farmworkers.
