Packers promote Brian Gutekunst as new general manager

Green Bay Packers hire Brian Gutekunst as GM, so John Schneider stays put in Seattle

The Green Bay Packers plan to name Brian Gutekunst as the new general manager, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

They swung for the fences first by requesting to interview Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider, but they were turned down.

The Packers found Ted Thompson's replacement without having to look outside the organization.

Multiple reports confirm as much, with both Albert Breer of and Adam Schefter of ESPN reporting that the contract is for five years.

That may be their only resort after the Seahawks denied the Packers permission to interview Schneider for their GM job, a source confirmed Saturday. He also worked for the Seahawks and Redskins before returning to the Packers in 2002, where he remained until the Seahawks made him their GM in 2010. He started as a regional scout, a position he held for 13 years.

The Packers are believed to have interviewed fellow in-house candidates, Eliot Wolf (director of football operations) and Russ Ball (president of football administration/finance), last week prior to the decision to promote Gutekunst. Schneider is locked up in Seattle through 2021.

Murphy has reportedly asked both Ball and Wolf to stay on, something Wolf might find hard.

Gutekunst will be entering his 20th season with the Packers. A promotion from within isn't surprising for Green Bay, but the team may have been interested in an outside hire before making the promotion.
