SpaceX set to launch secretive 'Zuma' spacecraft with classified United States government payload

A SpaceX Falcon9 rocket blasts off the launch pad in Feb. 2015 carrying the NOAA's Deep Space Climate Observatory spacecraft. The same type of rocket attempted to place a U.S. spy satellite in orbit on Sunday

This makes sense given that the relatively low orbit would SpaceX to bring the Falcon 9 first stage in for a landing back on land, rather than a drone ship at sea.

The launch window opens at 8 p.m. and closes at 10 p.m.

Originally scheduled to launch in November, problems with the rocket caused officials to delay plans by several weeks.

While it isn't exactly clear what the Zuma mission is or precisely who it's for, we do have some clues.

SpaceX tweeted that weather conditions are now 80 per cent favourable for Monday, and that it's completed yet more pre-launch testing, so all looks as good to go on paper as firing a giant canister of rocket fuel and secret technology into the sky can be.

SpaceX successfully sent something into space for the U.S. government, and that may be all we'll ever know about the so-called "Zuma" mission that Elon Musk's commercial space company completed from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida Sunday evening.

SpaceX is expected to kick off the New Year with a mysterious rocket launch.

Success on Sunday will clear the way for SpaceX's next launch from Florida, the much anticipated test flight of the Falcon Heavy booster.

Sunday night's launch will be streamed live online.

SpaceX just sent a secret government mission to space.

Defence contractor Northrop Grumman Corp was assigned to choose which company would launch the restricted payload, and it selected SpaceX's Falcon 9, calling it a cost effective option, said Lon Rains, a Northrop Grumman spokesman, before the launch.
