Ibuprofen and Infertility in Men Linked by Study

Ibuprofen male infertility issue joins cardiac risk as painkiller concerns grow

Researchers conducted a relatively small study that included men aged 18 to 35 and found that those who used the common over-the-counter drug developed hormonal imbalances that can cause a reduction in fertility, CBS news reported. Some took 1,200 milligrams of ibuprofen daily, the maximum limit as directed, over a six-week period, while oOthers took a placebo.

Advil and Motrin are two brand names for ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen may be linked to male infertility, a study has found, and although the effects were reversible the long-term effects are unknown.

This study might be especially troubling for athletes; Bernard Jégou, one of the study's co-authors, told CNN that many athletes take ibuprofen regularly to combat the aches and pains that accompany their sport, and warns that long-term usage like this could do irreversible damage.

"Prescribing providers rarely mention these adverse effects with patients when prescribing these medications", she said, according to CNN, noting that the study was "important" and that the use of ibuprofen could have a far greater negative effect on men who already have low fertility.

The research, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, showed that the men who took the high doses of ibuprofen developed the disorder known as compensated hypogonadism. "These compounds are good painkillers, but a certain amount of people in society use them without thinking of them as proper medicines".

Within 14 days in the men taking the drug, luteinizing hormones became coordinated with the levels of ibuprofen in their blood.

.

Researchers even tested ibuprofen on "bits of human testes" collected from organ donors and saw the same result: The drug hampered testosterone output.

The finding comes after repeated warnings from other researchers that ibuprofen can raise the risk of heart attacks in the general population and cause medical problems for pregnant women and their babies, including a more than doubling of the risk of miscarriage. This is because the pituitary gland at the base of the brain had ramped up levels of another hormone that drives the production of extra testosterone.
