Microsoft tests show Spectre patches drag down performance on older PCs

Microsoft is pausing Spectre- and Meltdown-related security patches for AMD machines after reports of computers not booting up, as first written up by The Verge. It lies in AMD's documentation for its CPUs, Microsoft asserts, which is erroneous in some respects, and whatever differences there are between the documents and reality of AMD's processors are serious enough to have caused affected machines to fail to boot.

But on Tuesday AMD said it was aware of an issue with some older-generation processors following the installation of a Microsoft security update that was published over the weekend.

Microsoft said on Tuesday the patches released to guard against the Meltdown and Spectre security threats slowed down some personal computers and servers, with systems running on older Intel processors seeing a noticeable decrease in performance.

The software maker also acknowledges that there is still much to be learned as companies like Intel, AMD, Amazon, Google, and Apple all issue updates. It's worth noting that the Windows Server is also affected and Microsoft recommends the IT admins to think twice before patching Meltdown and Spectre. However, he emphasized that businesses running transactional processing systems or time-sensitive applications need to conduct testing before they apply any OS security updates.

The development is a setback for AMD, which was more narrowly impacted by the bugs than its rival Intel was. One way that Microsoft is mitigating this risk is by removing support for the SharedArrayBuffer JavaScript optimization that was introduced in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. "That's why we've chosen to provide more context and information today and why we released updates and remediations as quickly as we could on January 3".

Shortly after the issue was uncovered, Microsoft began issuing patches to keep PC users safe.

Microsoft is now working on a new patch and has laid out several methods for those who have found their AMD device to be stuck in an unbootable state following the installation of the faulty fix.

The problem was no doubt exacerbated by vendors rushing to ship even basic mitigations for the Meltdown and Spectre flaws (see Meltdown and Spectre: Patches and Workarounds Appear). Microsoft's Windows 10 patch to mitigate this issue was due to arrive today but it seems that it caused issues with AMD systems. Intel's own findings largely confirm Microsoft's results.
